RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
