Comeback Medvedev Secures First Title in 882 Days

19 of the Russian's twenty-one titles have been earned on hardcourt

A comeback Medvedev secured his initial title for over two years with success over opponent Moutet in the tournament final.

The Russian, a former number one, has endured a challenging year, winning just one win at the big events and experiencing a meltdown at the US Open.

Medvedev's unpredictability on the professional circuit - and struggles with his serve in specific - led to him dropping out of the elite rankings and eventually parting ways with long-time mentor his previous coach.

Now training with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has consistently improved in the past month - culminating in a tightly fought three-set triumph over challenger Moutet.

It is his initial title since the Rome competition and initial on a hardcourt from that period of the previous year.

The win also means he has won 21 championships at twenty-one distinct tournaments.

"It's the first time I am participating in a competition with my two daughters together, so to win a trophy is especially meaningful," commented ranked player Medvedev.

"This championship is in honour of my second daughter Victoria, because the maiden victory I got when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."

The tennis star, the past champion, had failed in his last six championship matches, featuring in Halle previously this season.

His defensive strategy and regular outbursts on the playing surface had caused observers to doubt if his ability to perform at the highest level was finished.

However the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, making an effort to advance forward and compete assertively, reinforced by an improved serve.

The champion recovered from a deficit in the opening set against the tricky Moutet, winning 4 of the last five games to gain the advantage.

Both players exchanged service breaks in the second set before the challenger, bidding for his first professional title, gained dominance to force a final set.

He rescued four early-game break points in a competitive final set before Medvedev won the break to that score to secure the win.

Fittingly, Medvedev clinched the title with a point at the net area, with the Frenchman incapable to manage a shot after over two and a half hours.
